Yuka Hayashi has received high acclaim at numerous prestigious exhibitions, including consecutive selections for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, the Award of Excellence at the Contemporary Tea Ceremony Ceramics Exhibition, and the Special Jury Prize at the Hagi Grand Prix Exhibition. She is particularly known for her pink-toned Shino works, creating a contemporary expression of Shino through soft colors and her distinctive artistic sensibility. Unlike Yuka’s signature pink-toned Shino, this piece is centered on shades of gray. A pale gray Shino surface is accented with bands of dark gray glaze applied horizontally, creating a refined form and striking contrast. Beneath the dark gray glaze, delicate silvery-white patterns emerge, creating an appearance reminiscent of gently falling snow. This subtle interplay of colors and textures is one of the most distinctive features of the piece. Applying dark gray glaze in horizontal bands and achieving such complex effects through firing requires a high level of skill. The vivid red hi-iro firing is the most striking feature of this powerful and expressive tea bowl. Through anagama firing, the flames and wood ash interact with the Shino glaze, creating complex variations of vivid red, reddish-brown, brown, gray, and black. The resulting landscape is reminiscent of flames sweeping across the surface of the vessel. This tea bowl is a sister piece to the work that received the Tono Shinkin Bank Award at the 2026 Mino Tea Bowl Exhibition, and it is an equally magnificent work of art. 長石釉とコバルト釉を用いることで、美しく発色したコバルトブルーの中に白釉が顔を覗かせており、それが藍志野という作品の所以になっています。さらに、素地に鬼板粒をブレンドした土を使うことで、焦げて黒くなった板粒と藍色のコントラストが生まれています。 By using feldspar glaze and cobalt glaze, a beautiful cobalt blue is achieved, with the white glaze peeking through, which is the origin of the piece's name, "Ai-shino." A sister piece to the Shino tea bowl that earned its first selection at the 2024 Contemporary Tea Ceramics Exhibition on its debut attempt, this work uses clay from Nagakute, Nagoya. Its pale scarlet glaze carries a soft elegance, while the asymmetrical form reveals a distinct, rugged vitality. 關さんは2018年に独立して多治見市に工房をかまえられ、2024年には、陶芸作家の登竜門と言われる現代茶陶展に初入選を果たすなど、これから益々の活躍が期待される作家さんです。自ら採取した土を使い、いびつに回転する自作の手回し轆轤を用いてオリジナリティーの高い作品を造られ、年に2，3回しか窯焼きをされないため、世に出る作品はそれほど沢山ありません。 Seki established his own studio in Tajimi City in 2018 after becoming independent, and in 2024, he achieved his first selection for the Contemporary Tea Ceramics Exhibition, known as a gateway to success for ceramic artists. Using clay he gathers himself and his handmade manually-operated potter's wheel, which intentionally rotates irregularly, he creates highly original works.
