The subtitle “Nagoriyuki” (“Lingering Snow”) likely derives from the way the white glaze evokes patches of snow remaining on a mountainside. 中国三国時代末期の晋代初期に、俗世間を避け、竹林に集まって酒を酌み交わし、琴をひき清談をしたといわれる7人の隠者が描かれた、長谷川義昭作陶、七賢人 茶碗です。 This is a Seven Sages tea bowl, a ceramic work by Yoshiaki Hasegawa, depicting seven recluses from the early Jin Dynasty period at the end of China's Three Kingdoms era. These figures were said to have withdrawn from worldly affairs, gathered in a bamboo grove, enjoyed sake, played the qin (a Chinese zither), and engage in pure conversation. 長谷川義昭は、生前、縁起物の文字や絵画を茶碗やぐい吞に描いた作品を沢山作陶しており、茶碗に描かれている竹林の七賢人の絵画の出典は不明ですが、国宝級の絵画を模倣して描くことが好きだったので、そんな題材のひとつに、竹林の七賢人を選んだものと思われます。 During his lifetime, Yoshiaki Hasegawa produced many ceramic works, including tea bowls and guinomi (sake cups), often adorned with auspicious motifs, calligraphy, or paintings. While the exact source of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove painting on this bowl is unknown, Hasegawa was known for his fondness of replicating national treasure-level artworks.
