These figures were said to have withdrawn from worldly affairs, gathered in a bamboo grove, enjoyed sake, played the qin (a Chinese zither), and engage in pure conversation. 長谷川義昭は、生前、縁起物の文字や絵画を茶碗やぐい吞に描いた作品を沢山作陶しており、茶碗に描かれている竹林の七賢人の絵画の出典は不明ですが、国宝級の絵画を模倣して描くことが好きだったので、そんな題材のひとつに、竹林の七賢人を選んだものと思われます。 During his lifetime, Yoshiaki Hasegawa produced many ceramic works, including tea bowls and guinomi (sake cups), often adorned with auspicious motifs, calligraphy, or paintings.
